Finally the overland trip has begun! Tonight we're staying in Malmesbury, capital of the Swartland Wine country. It is a considerable distance closer to Cape Town than our plan of Karoo National Park, but the trip got off to a bit of a shaky start.
Yesterday morning we retrieved the Landy from the car park of our hostel in Cape Town (we'd been in South Africa for nearly a month waiting for the Landy to arrive) to find it had been broken into overnight. We didn't lose much of financial value but we're sorely going to miss
the Vegemite and Maggie soup and reduced cream we brought from New Zealand. Thank goodness we had some chups and dup ( its a long story and I blame Craig) with Ricky and Emma over some 'leaving drinks' at the hostel last night!
We thought it would be best go back to the Safari Centre to replace the stolen map and cigarette light charger for the GPS before setting off. Then this morning the Landy wouldnt start. The battery was completely flat and the emergency jump start thing didnt work either. Fortunately there are two batteries but after unpacking and repacking the necessary equipment to switch the battery we got off to a late start. By the time we'd purchased a Wild Card from the info centre, taken our trip commencement photos at the Cape of Good Hope and driven from the Cape to the Safari Centre the store was closed (assuming they open on Saturdays at all). After some trial and error at different shopping centres nearby we finally got what we needed and hit the trail in the late afternoon.
